About two weeks ago, an attempted infiltration from Jordan into the hotel area in Eilat was thwarted: The security incident in the Bay of Eilat occurred when a jet ski was spotted trying to penetrate Israeli territory from neighboring Jordan.
The commander of a Deborah-class missile ship identified the vessel as it was rapidly making its way towards the city of Eilat from the direction of Jordan and declared an attempted infiltration, hit it and forced it to flee back to the Jordanian coast.
The security establishment estimates that the vessel may not have been manned, but rather remotely controlled, which raised red flags and raised concerns that it was an attempt by terrorist elements to check the conduct of security forces in the area.
The case is currently under review and investigation in cooperation with the Jordanians.
Haaretz reported earlier today that upon taking office, Shin Bet chief David Zini conducted a tour of Eilat, in which he raised, among other things, concerns that given the city's location and proximity to Jordan, there is a reasonable scenario of terrorists infiltrating it from the land and especially from the sea.
The Shin Bet says that there is no concrete warning regarding the southern city, adding that this is operational planning that the organization is conducting as part of learning in the various sectors.
Tomorrow, the IDF will hold an exercise in Eilat, in which, among other things, a wide variety of scenarios on land and at sea will be practiced, including a scenario of terrorist infiltration.
