Firefighters from the Binyamin region worked during Shabbat on two fires that broke out in the Haredi city of Modiin Illit.
In the early hours of the morning, a fire broke out in an apartment on Mesilat Yosef Street. Crews arriving at the scene detected a fire in one of the apartments, and worked to extinguish the fire, search for trapped people, and work to release heat and smoke.
An initial investigation indicates that the fire broke out as a result of Shabbat candles being lit on a refrigerator in the house. One of the family members woke up as a result of the fire, woke up the rest of the family - and together they all escaped the fire.
The second fire broke out on Hafetz Chaim Street, where firefighters were working to extinguish an electrical cabinet that had caught fire, and a lot of smoke was rising into the building. Crews worked to clear the smoke and searched for trapped people.
Reshef Muni Ben Zion, who oversaw the events: "A disaster almost occurred in a fire on Mesilat Yosef Street in the city. If it hadn't been for one of the family members not waking up following the fire, we would have had a completely different event.
