The Knesset will discuss next week the initiative of United Torah Judaism faction chairman MK Uri Maklev to establish a parliamentary investigative committee to examine police violence in dispersing demonstrations and their conduct toward protesters.
In a request submitted to the Knesset Speaker, Maklev wrote that in the recent events "all red lines have been crossed," and that this is "severe, unbridled brutality directed against civilians.".
Maklev makes serious allegations against the police's conduct and claims selective enforcement against the ultra-Orthodox public. He also wrote that the existing review mechanisms, led by the Police Inspectorate, do not provide a real response to clarifying the allegations.
In the letter of request, Mellev requests that the investigative committee examine the chain of command, the instructions given to the police officers in the field, and the procedures for using force against protesters.
