The ultra-Orthodox factions are raising a new demand: returning the 'overcoming clause' to the agenda - and completing the legislation by the elections.
According to a report by Yuval Segev, the move came after Deputy Minister Israel Eichler's 'dormitory law' was approved yesterday in a preliminary reading, with a majority of 44 MKs voting in favor against 37 opponents.
The ultra-Orthodox factions are interested in ensuring the implementation of the law in the future, and therefore want to enact the 'overriding clause' over the Supreme Court.
The Overcoming Clause bill was approved on first reading in March 2023, and a significant portion of its legislative process was completed before the October 7 massacre. The desire of the Haredi parties is to move forward with at least one of the measures - the 'Overcoming Clause' or the 'Dorm Law' - in order to show during their election campaign that they are capable of passing the law.
