United States President Donald Trump announced this evening (Tuesday) that he has decided to extend the ceasefire with Iran.
The president's announcement came following an urgent appeal from Pakistan's army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, who were acting as mediators in the planned talks in Islamabad.
In a post published by President Trump on the social network Truth, which he owns, he made it clear that the decision to stop the attack stems from the American recognition that the regime in Tehran is undergoing a deep internal upheaval.
The president wrote: "Based on the fact that the Iranian government is, unsurprisingly, severely divided, and at the request of Field Marshal Asim Munir and Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, we have been asked to delay our attack on the State of Iran until such time as its leaders and representatives formulate a unified proposal.".
""Therefore, I have instructed our army to continue the siege, and in all other aspects to remain ready and capable, and therefore I will also extend the ceasefire until the date when their proposal is submitted and the discussions are concluded, one way or another.".
The announcement comes after reports that the negotiations planned to take place in Islamabad were on the verge of cancellation, after Iran conveyed an official message through the Pakistani mediator that it would not participate in them.
The Iranian Tasnim News Agency also reported earlier that Iran had finally decided not to participate in the talks that were planned for tomorrow in Pakistan.
At the same time, it was reported that US Vice President J.D. Vance's flight to Pakistan was canceled.
American officials noted that one of the reasons for the crisis is Iran's refusal to accept American demands to limit uranium enrichment, along with its lack of commitment to actually holding the meeting.
Ariel Kahane, the political commentator for Israel Hayom, wrote: "In fact, this is a situation of freezing until Trump makes another decision. The war is not renewed while Iran and its allies can recover. This is, how shall we say, not the most successful outcome of the situation. On the other hand, he probably doesn't have any stronger cards.".
