The 'Uri Zafon' movement reveals that the IDF is constructing a concrete wall near Avivim on the northern border at a cost of millions of shekels.
About a week ago, members of the movement held a tour near the border fence calling for the establishment of a Jewish civilian settlement in southern Lebanon. During the tour, members of the movement encountered work to build a concrete wall being carried out by an IDF contractor.
The 'Uri North' investigation shows that construction of the fence was approved before the start of the war and continues without supervision or reconsideration of security needs and the control of IDF forces in a security strip deep inside Lebanese territory.
Following the revelation of the construction of the wall, members of the movement wrote a letter to Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who serves as Minister of Defense, demanding that the construction of the wall be stopped.
In their letter, the movement's members emphasize that the wall is irrelevant and harms IDF activity in the region: "In building this wall, the State of Israel is investing millions of shekels in establishing infrastructure that does not serve the real security needs of the State of Israel, and even harms them. The old border is no longer relevant to the security reality in the north, and continued investment in it reflects adherence to an old concept instead of the necessary adaptation to operational reality.".
""In conversations we had with officers in the field, it was made clear to us that the concrete wall actually makes operational activity difficult. Crossing is only possible at a few and limited points, the wall impairs operational flexibility, and makes it difficult to see and control the space beyond it. Despite this, we were told that construction is only continuing because the tender was approved about three years ago.
""Such a bureaucratic consideration cannot override a security consideration. It is impossible for the State of Israel to continue spending public money on a project that harms security. Beyond the financial waste, when it is possible that some of the investment can still be saved by reusing materials, the very existence of the wall expresses a mistaken and dangerous perception, as if concrete and obstacles are what will bring security.".
The movement's members demand an order to stop the construction of the wall: "The October 7 massacre proved to all of us in the most painful way that walls do not bring security but rather cause degeneration and, in effect, replace control, initiative, presence, and real grip on the ground.
""The State of Israel has paid a terrible bloody price for this concept, and we must not repeat the same mistake on the northern border. We call on you to intervene immediately, order the work to be stopped, and re-examine the very necessity of the project in light of the real security needs of the State of Israel and the residents of the north. The State of Israel cannot afford to invest money in harming its security.".
