Israeli chef Raz Shabtai made history in the past 24 hours in the history of world cuisine: the restaurant 'Mutra' he founded in Miami became the first strictly kosher restaurant to win a Michelin star - just a year after it opened.
The Michelin Guide praised the Israeli chef for "bringing his interpretation of classic Middle Eastern cuisine to sunny Miami" - noting: "The menu is hyper-local and changes frequently, so don't be surprised when something runs out. But don't worry, the excellent staff will help you discover your new favorite dishes.".
Shabtai, a Jerusalem native, named the restaurant after his late grandmother: "We have always believed that kosher food deserves the same ambition and creativity as any great restaurant in the world. Growing up in Jerusalem, I was surrounded by amazing flavors, spices, and food that told stories. I wanted to bring that same feeling here, not just for the local Jewish community, but for all of South Florida.".
The chef later posted a thank you post on his Instagram account, in which he wrote: "Today, my heart is full. First, thank you, God. For every blessing, for every challenge, and for giving me the strength to keep going when the road seemed impossible.
""To my team - this honor belongs to you. Every long day, every late night, every sacrifice, every detail, every plate. Your passion and dedication have made a dream come true. I am forever grateful for walking this journey with me. To our guests, friends and supporters - thank you for believing in us and allowing us to share our story through food.".
The Israeli Consulate in Miami welcomed: "Motra becomes the first strictly kosher Mehadrin restaurant in the world to receive a Michelin star. Israeli chef Raz Shabtai has broken the glass ceiling. The restaurant in Miami draws inspiration from the multicultural food traditions of Jerusalem and immigrant communities.".
