Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced today (Monday) to the High Court of Justice that he intends to appoint an interior minister before the elections.
In a transitional government, the Prime Minister has the authority to appoint ministers without the need for Knesset approval.
The leading candidate to enter the Interior Ministry is coalition chairman Ofir Katz, who is considered Netanyahu's right-hand man and, during his four years in the Knesset, managed to maintain the coalition's survival.
Since July 2025, the position of Minister of the Interior has remained unappointed.
As a result, the government has so far decided to transfer about 90 of the Interior Minister's powers to the Prime Minister and an additional power to the Finance Minister. The Knesset has approved the transfer of 56 powers, while about 35 additional powers have not yet been approved for transfer.
In the response of the Attorney General's Office on behalf of the government, the Prime Minister, and the Legal Advisor to the Government to petitions submitted to the High Court of Justice, it was stated: "We would like to update that according to what was communicated from the Prime Minister's Office, bearing in mind that there are additional and important powers of the Minister of the Interior whose exercise is required and which have not yet been transferred to the Prime Minister, the Prime Minister announced that he intends to appoint a Minister of the Interior during the election period.".
