Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said today (Sunday) in an interview with Al-Jazeera that his country is avoiding a conflict with Israel - because "we have no interest in it.".
In an interview that has not yet been broadcast, al-Shara added that his country is working to reach a security agreement with Israel with the participation of additional countries.
Al-Sharaa also said that if the security agreement that is reached is successful, it could pave the way for comprehensive peace, without Syria giving up its right "to the occupied Golan.".
Al-Shara also addressed the developments in neighboring Lebanon in the interview, saying that Damascus was discussing with the Lebanese government solutions that would help bring Lebanon to safety. He noted that any chaos in Lebanon would directly affect Syria.
He added that Syria supports the Lebanese government and the Lebanese army having a monopoly on weapons and the decision on peace and war.
Al-Shara stressed that Syria does not intend to intervene militarily in Lebanon. He said that Damascus is holding talks with the Lebanese government about solutions that will help bring the country "to a safe place.".
