The United States Department of Energy officially announced last night (Thursday) that the civil nuclear agreement between the United States and Saudi Arabia has been signed.
The agreement was signed by the United States Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, and his Saudi counterpart, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman.
The agreement includes two documents: the civil nuclear agreement, and a security-related side agreement.
The Energy Department said in a statement that the agreement gives American companies access to the Saudi nuclear energy market, thus helping American industry.
The official announcement also stated that the agreements will enhance regional security and maintain "high standards of nuclear safety, security, and non-proliferation.".
The agreement is expected to receive congressional approval.
Saudi Arabia is satisfied with the civil nuclear agreement - and is working to convince that it does not pose a threat to any of the countries in the region, including Israel.
An unofficial Saudi civilian source told Kan News that the agreement will save the kingdom 1.5 million barrels of oil per day, which is used for civilian needs such as electricity and healthcare. According to him, the agreement "is not directed against Israel or any country in the region, and is an internal Saudi interest.".
