MK Yaakov Margi of Shas delivered pointed remarks in the Knesset plenum this evening (Monday), during the debate on the 'Basic Law on Torah Study'.
""This law is being brought forward today to say to a small group in Israeli society - the High Court judges, who have lost their compass, I hope they have not lost their conscience as well, please, pay some attention to Israel's heritage. Take this law and embrace it.".
""The nations of the world look to this sacred document. The Torah is the heritage of the Jewish people. When you come to discuss, look at the morality, the vision of the prophets of Israel, and the path that the Torah of Israel is directed towards. The Torah does not need this law. The citizens of Israel do not need this law. The Torah has existed since it was given during difficult times under persecution. The people of Israel know how to preserve the Torah, and the Torah has preserved it throughout all generations.".
Margi added: "I have been closely following the flood of text about the Basic Law on Torah Study. I would like to send a hug and encouragement from here to all IDF soldiers, reservists and their families, to the wounded, and to the bereaved families, for their invaluable contribution.".
""The Torah often teaches us the value of self-sacrifice. Nachshon ben Aminadab is the first in everything, both in the sacrifices of the presidents and in the campaigns. Self-sacrifice surpasses everything. But I want to ask on behalf of this Knesset - forgiveness, pardon and atonement from them, for often carrying their name, their right, and their holiness in vain.".
