MK Meir Porush spoke this evening (Monday) in a debate on the bill to split the role of the Attorney General and called on the opposition to support the bill out of compassion for Attorney Gali Bahar from Yara - who is collapsing from the workload.
Porush Fatah: "I hear the opposition's cries of discord here about the 'end of democracy' and the 'destruction of the rule of law,' have mercy on me. At first I was scared, but then I thought: What is the cry about? After all, I expected you to be the first to sign this bill. After all, we are all in favor of streamlining the government's work, right?
""I'm not saying, God forbid, that Attorney Bahar-Miara doesn't want to perform her duties faithfully. God forbid. But the facts speak for themselves - she's simply collapsing from the load. Naturally. How do we know that? It's enough to read the Supreme Court justices. Just last week, the High Court justices issued a severe reprimand to the attorney.".
He spoke about the Supreme Court's reprimand: "What is the reprimand for? For dragging her feet in a case of leaking state secrets. Personal law! The High Court has given her 90 days to explain why an investigation is not being opened. And what happens? The lady collapses, and literally in the 90th minute asks for an extension.".
""Out of respect for the court, I'm trying to help. The judges were furious. What did they say? 'Conduct that establishes a fait accompli - one should not agree with it,' and they mentioned 'a grim history' and 'a systematic pattern of action.' It's inconceivable: for trifles that are convenient for the agenda, investigation teams are immediately established, but for security leaks, they evade, even though the prime minister himself begged for an investigation.".
""The answer is simple - because of so many hats, you can't see your head. It is also supposed to advise the government (or, more accurately, against it), to decide on investigations (or to postpone them), and to defend us in the High Court of Justice (and usually to do the opposite).
""Another and central thing - she is responsible for enforcement against crime. She is responsible for making sure there is no crime, for implementing all the supervision, the prosecutor's office, for expediting cases, for making sure something happens. Mercy on the Arabs, every day murder and more murder and more murder. Why doesn't she enforce the law? She's not bad, she just has a huge burden on her.".
Porush called on the opposition to support the bill: "We came to do a favor. This law is simply 'lifesaving' for the advisor. Let's help her and split the role: one person will actually advise, and another will be the Attorney General. That way we won't get reprimanded, and maybe we'll finally investigate leaks in real time, and not at the ninety-first minute. I call on the opposition to show compassion for the attorney general and support the law.".
