Two Air Force fighter jets were scrambled this afternoon (Tuesday) towards a Bulgarian Electra passenger plane that was en route from Warsaw to Ben Gurion Airport - after the pilot activated a security emergency code declaring a hijacking.
The plane, flight number 155 of the Polish airline Lot, operated by the Bulgarian company Electra, with 180 passengers on board, was flying over the Mediterranean Sea.
As a result, it was decided to launch fighter jets to accompany and inspect the incident.
After a short time, contact was restored with the plane's crew, and the pilots informed us that this was a malfunction and not a security incident.
Following the incident, the plane did not continue its flight to Israel and is expected to land in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The IDF said: "Two Air Force fighter jets were scrambled toward a civilian plane in the Mediterranean Sea following a report received of a lack of contact with the plane. The incident has ended and contact with the plane has been restored. There is no fear of a security incident.".
