Political conflict between the US and Italy: Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloni attacked United States President Donald Trump today (Friday) - and her Foreign Minister announced that he is canceling an official visit to the US next week.
The reason? Trump insulted Maloney, when he said in an interview with an Italian media outlet that she "begged" for a photo with him, during the G7 summit in France this week.
""She was probably glad I talked to her, I didn't have to talk to her," Trump was quoted as saying by La7, after he himself asked the journalist about the Italian prime minister. "She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so much. I wouldn't have taken a picture, but I felt sorry for her," Trump insulted.
In an interview with Italy's Channel 7, Maloney responded angrily: "Donald Trump's statements are completely fabricated. I am truly astonished and outraged. I don't know why the President of the United States behaves this way towards his allies, and this is not the first time this has happened. I can only say that it is disappointing that he does not show the same determination towards the enemies of the West and the enemies of the United States, whose leaders he actually tends to pamper and treat with much more forgiveness.".
She added: "There is one thing he needs to remember - neither I nor Italy ever beg.".
Italy's Foreign Minister wrote: "Trump's serious and offensive words towards the Prime Minister hurt all of Italy.".
