Benjamin (Benny) Forer, a Chabad follower, was officially appointed this week to his position as a judge in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County, California.

In doing so, he became the first Chabad member in the United States to serve as a judge.

The ceremonial swearing-in ceremony was conducted by Supreme Court Justice Wendy Segal, in the presence of his family - his wife Dina and their four children - with the participation of judges, prosecutors, defense attorneys, public figures, members of his synagogue and members of the Jewish community.

Speaker after speaker at the ceremony returned to similar themes in describing Forer: his intellect, his fairness, his integrity and his ability to build genuine connections with people from very different backgrounds and perspectives.

Forer's path to the judiciary took an extraordinary turn: in June, over 1.16 million residents of the district elected him to the position.

His actual term was not scheduled to begin until early 2027, but the Governor of California decided to advance his inauguration and immediately appoint him to a vacant position.

After the ceremony, Forer privately shared another moment from the months leading up to his appointment: Although he had already been elected for a term that would begin in January, months passed without a response regarding the possibility of an earlier appointment.

Then, during a trip to New York with his 15-year-old son, Dov Ber, Forer visited the Zion of the Lubavitch Rebbe. Shortly after leaving the "tent," while riding an Uber to his next meeting, Forer received the long-awaited response from the governor's office - that he would take office immediately.

Forer brings to the bench a wealth of professional experience spanning nearly twenty years as a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles. In addition to his legal work, he has served as a law professor at the University of Southern California since 2014, where he teaches courses in privacy and cybersecurity.

In his inaugural speech, Forer spoke of the humility he felt when he took on the mantle of judge and the responsibility that comes with it. In his remarks, the new judge connected the worlds of Jewish and American law, quoting from the sources of the Sages, from the teachings of the Lubavitcher Rebbe, and from the rulings of the giants of American law, while expressing gratitude to the officials who accompanied him at the beginning of his professional career.
