Two very difficult events - against the backdrop of a home birth - were treated in the last two weeks at Hadassah Mount Scopus by pediatric emergency departments, prematurity, and premature intensive care teams.

Thanks to the exceptional alertness and rapid diagnosis of the staff, the babies' lives were saved.

In the first case, a baby born in a planned home birth was taken two weeks ago, just an hour after his birth, to the Hadassah Mount Scopus Medical Center, suffering from a condition of asphyxia - a lack of blood supply to the brain.

The parents noticed that he was in serious distress and called the MDA, who evacuated him to Mount Scopus.

At the medical center, thanks to the vigilance of the staff in the Pediatric Emergency Medicine Department and the involvement of the Director of the Neonatology Department at Hadassah, respiratory distress, bluish skin color, and an abnormal neurological condition were diagnosed.

In the neonatal intensive care unit, a baby was connected to a brain wave reading device that indicated a seizure, and therefore it was decided, as is customary, to cool the baby's body in order to prevent secondary brain damage.

As of today, the baby's condition has stabilized and he is still being treated in the neonatal intensive care unit.

The director of the Department of Neonatology at Hadassah, Prof. Smadar Even Tov, emphasizes that if he had been born in the hospital, he would have received immediate evaluation and rapid resuscitation treatments, so as not to cause further brain damage.

Another incident occurred ten days ago, during which the Hadassah Mount Scopus team saved the life of a three-day-old baby girl.

The baby, who was born in a planned home birth, was urgently brought by her parents to the emergency room at Hadassah Mount Scopus - three days after birth.

The parents reported a large amount of bleeding visible in the diaper and therefore rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The pediatricians in the pediatric emergency department quickly identified that the baby was in a state of shock, suffering from severe acidosis and very low hemoglobin, and was in danger of death, and began immediate treatment.

By decision of the director of the Neonatology Department at Hadassah, the baby was transferred for further treatment to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Tests performed indicated a deficiency in vitamin K, an essential component for preventing bleeding - which was not given to the baby due to the parents' decision.

It should be emphasized that this is a vitamin that has been given in Israel and around the world in recent decades to every baby immediately after birth, to prevent extremely dangerous bleeding conditions.

The team at the Premature Infant Intensive Care Unit saved the baby's life with treatment that included administering vitamin K and blood products - and resulted in a significant improvement in clotting function until the bleeding stopped.

The team also emphasizes that this is one of the most difficult cases they have treated due to vitamin K deficiency.

The baby, who was out of danger, was released home after the life-saving treatment was completed.

[96
12173,66522,11275
post-1063206","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-96","tag-12173","tag-66522","tag-11275
