Khaled Awaishat, a bus driver who was attacked yesterday while working in Beit Shemesh and was moderately injured, reenacted the attack this morning (Monday) on the "Kalman Lieberman" program on Channel 2, which resulted in him being taken to the hospital with bruises on his face and body.

""He spat on me and called me 'stinky Arab' before punching me in the face," the 48-year-old driver said.

According to him, the escalation began when a passenger demanded to get off between stations: "I stopped at the station, no one wanted to get off, no one wanted to get on. I closed the doors and started driving as usual. I walked maybe ten meters away from the station and there was a traffic jam, I stopped as usual like everyone else. Suddenly one [of the passengers] jumped up and wanted to get off there. I'm not allowed to do that, according to the law I'm not allowed to get off at the station.".

""I told him: Honey, I'm not allowed to do this. It's life-threatening. I didn't know it was life-threatening to me, you understand? I didn't agree to open the doors, and he opened my door, opened the guard door, punched me with an iron in his hand. I already passed out, I fell on the chair. I'm lucky I pulled the brake.

""I turned to get the phone to call the police, but suddenly - punches to the head, blows to the right and left until I lost consciousness. I only woke up in the ambulance. No one intervened... Look at how many drivers got beaten. Because I'm an Arab. Let's put it this way, if it was the other way around, what would they do?""

Khaled said that he and other drivers are afraid to drive in some areas of the city: "All the drivers suffer there. They harass the drivers, curse at the drivers, sometimes beat the drivers. They block the drivers with their scooters, with their bicycles. Do you understand? They do exactly that, in short. They do exactly that. What's going on in Beit Shemesh - it's a waste of time. A lot of drivers have left their jobs.".

Khaled is currently hospitalized and still doesn't know if he'll get back on the bus: "The truth is, first of all, I want to see what the police do about this. When will this racism end? I come to work, I come to provide a service, you treat me like this? They don't even say good morning. They don't say thank you. Do you understand? I'm almost 50, I'm already a grandfather, do you understand?""

The suspect, a 15-year-old boy from Jerusalem, was located overnight and taken for questioning at the Beit Shemesh bus station. The investigation revealed that an argument broke out between the bus driver and the suspect, during which the suspect allegedly spat at the driver and attacked him with his hands.

Today, the police are expected to bring the suspect before the court and request an extension of his detention.
