Five Givati fighters, Seder yeshiva students from the Rotem Battalion of the Givati Brigade, who refused last Wednesday to board a Nemr-type armored personnel carrier in which a paramedic was staying, were sentenced this evening (Sunday) by the battalion commander to 10 days in prison in the military prison.

11 additional soldiers were sentenced to 5 days in prison.

Two of the five soldiers sentenced to 10 days in detention will undergo an evaluation committee before returning to combat.

IDF sources say that the soldiers' punishments were determined based on their degree of involvement in the incident.

The battalion commander judged the fighters and took command measures against those involved, after the incident was investigated.

The decision sparked a wave of angry reactions.

Rabbi Dror Aryeh, one of the rabbis of the Sderot Hesder Yeshiva, protested against the move: "This is unparalleled insolence. The Minister of Defense failed to protect dedicated fighters from progressive trolling. The soldiers are heroes, no prison will break them, they are the pillar of fire in front of the camp, they will be remembered for generations as the real victors in this delusional story. Their commanders acted contrary to the law and contrary to the order. The ones who should have been tried are the commanders who violated the procedures.".

The organization 'Women Fighters for the Sanctity of the Camp': "We demand the immediate release of the fighters and the punishment of those who abuse them. The progressive agenda of coercion has reached the lowest moral low and an extreme and violent result. The IDF is a Jewish army, Halacha, the mitzvah and the sanctity are our guiding light, the observant of the mitzvot will not be an eskopa trampled by commanders who are not worthy of it.".

""This is a disgrace and a sign of disgrace to the Chief of Staff and the Minister of Defense. You cannot talk about recruiting Haredim as long as observant people in the IDF are persecuted for upholding the Torah and holiness.".

Channel 7, which exposed the affair, reported that the incident occurred in the Rotem Battalion, when the force operating in the Gaza Strip was required to carry out operational activity that included a patrol and the use of a medical vehicle in which a paramedic was staying. Three fighters refused to get into the vehicle, and according to sources familiar with the details, the rest of the platoon's fighters were then asked if any of them were willing to get in with her, and according to the fighters, none of them agreed.

A source involved in the details of the incident told Channel 7 that the company commander spoke with the fighters and explained to them the importance of the operational activity and the urgency of carrying it out, but they stood by their refusal.

According to the source, the brigade commander was also involved and approved the execution of the activity in the presence of the paramedic due to its importance and urgency.

Channel 7 reported that Rabbi Zvi Kostiner, Rosh Yeshiva of Mitzpe Ramon, and Rabbi Shlomo Shoshan, Rosh Yeshiva of Beit Shean, whose students from their yeshiva serve in the department, instructed their students not to get into a combat vehicle when a paramedic is in it.

The Hesder Yeshiva Union supported the fighters, claiming that they acted in accordance with the Joint Service Order and that there was no reason to punish soldiers who acted in accordance with it.

[24
2088,5074,2288,66448,66485
post-1062935","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-24","tag-2088","tag-5074","tag-2288","tag-66448","tag-66485
