The late Shalom Leon, father of Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Leon, passed away today (Wednesday), at the age of 92, at Ichilov Hospital in Tel Aviv.

Leon's funeral will take place tomorrow at the Givatayim cemetery, where he lived.

The Leon family will be sitting in Jerusalem for seven days.

Shalom Leon was born in the city of Thessaloniki, Greece, and in the 1930s - while still a baby - he immigrated with his parents to Israel. His father's family remained in Europe and perished in Auschwitz during the Holocaust.

He married Hannah, who passed away several years ago. The couple had three children: Moshe Leon, Mayor of Jerusalem, Prof. Nissim Leon of Bar Ilan University and one of the leading researchers of Haredi society in Israel, and Prof. Orly Meron, Head of the Department of Social and Health Sciences at Bar Ilan University.

Leon spent his life in the automotive industry, and for many years served as a cantor and poet at the Heichal Moshe synagogue in Givatayim. His sons, Moshe and Nissim, also continued his path and served as public servants for years. "Father and mother invested their entire lives in educating their children," Professor Leon once said, "that was the central goal of their lives.".

The Jerusalem Municipality statement reads: "Shalom was among the members of the generation who established their home in the Land of Israel out of faith, tradition, modesty and hard work. Throughout his life, he combined manual labor with a long-standing tradition of cantorship, and was a central and beloved figure in his family.".

They added: "Together with his wife Hannah, he raised a wonderful family and educated his children in the values of dedication, responsibility, love of the people and the land, and adherence to the traditions of Israel. The entire Jerusalem Municipality shares in the mourning of the Leon family and expresses its condolences to the mayor, his brother and sister, his children, his grandchildren, and all family members.".
