1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It seemed like a colorful happening that recalled the good years of the Likud. In the past, it was branded chewing gum with the names of candidates, some of whom are no longer alive; lollipops with pictures and other various and strange branded products: water bottles, popsicles, visor hats, hand fans and what not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were also food stalls today. The most notable was that of Uncle Amsalem, the man and the refreshments, the minister who knows how to invite people to his house and deliver meals ("I cooked it myself") like a king.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And as always, there were also the printed lists of 'deals.' Almost every voter entered the polling station with such an envelope in hand, the closest equivalent to the 'and do whatever you are told' of the Haredi parties. In contrast, of course. For here it is not the great men of Israel who are taught how to vote, but rather the receivers of votes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found one such poor and orphaned list on rocky ground with ants walking on it. I tried to understand the hint. Because is this the end of all man? You enter the political world with great fanfare, to the sound of applause from family, neighbors, friends and the crowd of flatterers - but always in the end the day comes when only the ants are interested in you. Ask politicians who have been expelled from the Knesset or the ministerial offices - how the phone is silent, how they wait in anticipation for the editor in the studio to remember that they still exist and call. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

From time to time I meet them in the Knesset, especially when they come to the opening of the former Knesset MKs' session. It's sad to see them, sad to hear them. Even those who present a presentation of "there is life after the Knesset" and "I really feel good the day after.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say what you will, I already recognize the look in your eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was there, at the Nation Buildings, I heard the talk about "extending the voting time." This was expected, ostensibly, because the congestion was enormous. Car after car, huge traffic jams, a long line - it was clear that not all those applying would be able to exercise their democratic right by 9:00 PM, the time the gates locked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, this time Netanyahu surprised and did not act to extend the voting time, which means that the results seemed fine to him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

His main goals: a state list. Anyone who doesn't align with him - David Bitan and Nir Barkat - is out, and also, according to rumors and gossip, because there is no practical proof, to see Tali Gottlieb 'bruised' politically. It's not really clear why, because she is very popular in the field and also did a good job, didn't undermine him, didn't speak against him. It's possible, as someone in her circle told me, that it's "not Netanyahu" but "someone in his circle." And his circle, as we know, has often caused damage behind his back. Who knows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either way, most of MK David Bitan's 'deals' failed (apart from the candidate in the 'new woman' slot), Nir Barkat in a negligible place (and Netanyahu may choose to degrade him even further, through armor), and only Tali Gottlieb defeated the system. In principle, she has no 'votes,' she didn't flatter herself, didn't cross her legs for joy, and she doesn't have a 'commander.' But she has the sympathy of the area - and that won. She won 12th place (which means 20th, after the armor, but that's another story).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some conclude and say, "The era of deals is over," and put the emphasis on free voters. This is not accurate, because there are 'deals' that did work and had their effect. The big deals, especially.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, most importantly, in elections where every vote truly counts, groups have significance, even if they are small. Not large differences separate MKs who were dropped from the list from those who are still on it. So dozens of votes from Hasidism or an ultra-Orthodox vote-buyer may decide the candidate's victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And what about the claim that groups that will not necessarily vote for Likud in the elections influence the character of the party's Knesset members?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the past, we grumbled about the settler commanders, those who vote for Smotrich\/Ben Gvir, but function for Likud and exert internal influence on the list. This time, we grumbled about the Haredim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was there, I saw and was impressed that indeed many Haredim who had joined the Likud came to exercise their right to vote. Women were pulling baby strollers, alongside bearded husbands dressed strictly in black and white; 'modern' Haredim with colorful shirts, but those who still make sure to vote 'as far as they can' for 'United Torah Judaism' or Shas. This time, for a change, there were also many Gur Hasidim. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will see most of them vote in the upcoming primaries (if the method does not change. On the other hand, trust Netanyahu, who is already sitting on the podium and testing screening methods), since this time their Pazm has not yet expired. But some of them will definitely be visible and noticeable this time as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This was observed in groups of active members of the Sert Viznitz Hasidim in Haifa, and the Karlin and Gur Hasidim in Jerusalem. It is difficult to know the extent of the phenomenon, but it amounts to several thousand active members, out of 140,000 Likud active members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even if not every Haredi who was active on the day of the primaries makes the effort to leave the house, stand in traffic, find parking and vote - it is still enough for a few hundred to make the effort to change the results. Which means that during the term, Knesset members and ministers will make an effort to 'come towards' that group of votes or Hasidism - on any issue that is important to them. All it takes is for a Haredi vote contractor to pick up the phone and ask an MK\/minister for some request for that representative to make a concentrated effort to fulfill the request and work overtime on it. The implications are serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the central figures of the ultra-Orthodox movement are Itzik Kofman, a veteran vote-buyer, Yossi Rosenbaum, and recently Moti Babchik, one of the most powerful people in Gur, Moshe Porush, CEO of "HaMevaser," also entered the fray, and there are also groups like "Kesa Rahamim," whose votes brought Minister Shlomo Karei into the Knesset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The million-dollar question is: What do they gain from this? Some of the vote-getters get paid from monthly PR 'deals' and the like. But what does the Haredi functionary gain? Well, think about different problems. For example, 'we need a bus line' from the neighborhood in Afula to Bnei Brak. Or the mayor is unwilling to give an allocation to 'our' synagogue. At this stage, an appeal is made to the honorable minister, with a request to help. From here, you continue on your own as the imagination allows. Because if you are part of a command, there is a good chance that the Minister of Transportation (or someone else) will want to help and make an effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So it's true, in practice the ultra-Orthodox functionaries did not succeed in putting even a single Haredi representative on the list (and there were several candidates, some of them excellent), and yet, it's hard to underestimate their influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To summarize: the amount of hype and buzz surrounding the Haredi commander is great, in practice the numbers are much more modest - and yet, we must not underestimate the ability of every voice, certainly every hundredth voice, to have an impact. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because it's crucial.
