The new epidemic of hybrid work<\/strong>: Back, neck, shoulder pain and accumulated physical fatigue \u2022 Gali Seltzer, director of physiotherapy at the Integrative Medical Ker rehabilitation hospital, explains how hours in front of a laptop, working from the couch and lack of movement throughout the day are the silent causes of physical burnout \u2022 What can be done to stop this before the pain becomes chronic?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working from home started as a dream:<\/strong> No traffic jams, no distracting hallway conversations, with coffee from your own kitchen and the ability to put laundry in the machine between Zoom meetings. After a few years of hybrid work, it turns out that it's less good for the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the dining table, the sofa, and the laptop on your lap were not built for prolonged work of eight to ten hours in front of a screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laptopitis is the unofficial name for the phenomenon, which is common in the media. It describes the range of pains and injuries caused by long hours of work in front of a laptop: neck pain, lower back pain, shoulders, wrist pain and sometimes also headaches and muscle fatigue. Professionals use terms such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Repetitive Strain Injuries \u2013 RSI
\u2022 Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Data collected in recent years by international health organizations reveals the scale of the phenomenon: over 651% of teleworkers report new musculoskeletal pain or worsening of existing pain since switching to hybrid work. The lack of ergonomic workstations is a major risk factor, increasing physical strain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order not to wait for temporary pain to become permanent damage, Gali Seltzer, director of the physiotherapy department at the Integrative Medical Ker rehabilitation hospital, explains the most common mistakes when working from home and the simple ways to fix them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Before work<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gentle mobility exercises that will move the joints and prevent a feeling of tightness are essential in preparation for hours without much active movement. It is recommended to start with head and neck rotations. Bring the head to the shoulder for a gentle stretch, continue moving the shoulder girdle forward and backward, rounding the back and bringing the shoulder blades together. Later, it is worth moving to a stable position next to the table or kitchen counter, placing your hands for support, and performing wide pelvic rotations that move the joints of the lower back. This movement moves the fluids in the joints, improves blood circulation and optimally prepares the skeleton and muscles for prolonged sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 The couch is not an office.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting slouched without lower back support creates cumulative strain on the spine and neck muscles. When sitting correctly, the center of gravity of the upper body rests directly on the pelvis and hips, allowing a natural, straight position for the lower back, neck, and head. Conversely, when you sink into a chair that is too soft, the pelvis rolls backward and rounds. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This poor posture causes a chain reaction: the upper back and neck bend, the head is thrown forward, and the shoulders become rounded, a combination that invites musculoskeletal pain over time. Therefore, if you don't have a tidy workspace, it's much better to work at a sturdy desk and a regular dining chair than to spend hours with a laptop on your lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Working smart in front of the computer<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Placing the laptop on your lap is a sure recipe for pain: the screen is too low, and in order to see anything, the neck remains bent forward for hours. The hand that holds the mouse in the air and receives no support creates continuous work for the wrist muscles. A simple solution like a laptop stand, external keyboard, and mouse will change your entire working position and take a lot of strain off your neck and shoulders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u2022 Ergonomic adjustment of the work environment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The correct proportion between the height of the chair and the desk keeps the head straight and the gaze reaching exactly to the top of the screen without forcing the neck to tilt. Therefore, it is worth choosing a chair that provides good support for the lower back, making sure that the feet are fully placed on the floor\/stool, and that the knees are at or slightly below the pelvis. If the screen is too low, you can use an adjustable screen or raise it. It is recommended to incorporate an adjustable desk, which allows for intermittent standing work. It is also important to stop every 30 to 45 minutes to get up, walk around, and do light stretches that will prevent the body from becoming fixed in the same position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Working from home has eliminated the transparent movements we used to make in the office without noticing: walking from the car, walking between offices, or going out for lunch. When the distance between the bed, desk, and refrigerator is five steps, it is recommended to artificially create small walks during the day, such as a short walk outside before starting, or phone meetings that must be done standing up. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
