The Jerusalem District Court ordered this evening (Sunday) a temporary halt to the plan to surround Ketziot Prison - where terrorists are imprisoned - with crocodiles.

Judge Avraham Rubin issued a temporary order prohibiting the performance of actions pursuant to the Minister of Environmental Protection's declaration of crocodiles as "tended wildlife" - a legal definition that allows their transfer and detention in a detention facility.

The decision was made after the "Let Animals Live" association filed an administrative petition against Environmental Protection Minister Idit Silman, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and the Prison Service.

The order will remain in effect until a decision is made on the request for an interim order, after the state submits its response to the issue by mid-August.

The focus of the controversy is the Minister of Environmental Protection's decision of July 15, which was intended to allow the use of crocodiles as a deterrent and guard in prisons.

According to the petition, the move deprives crocodiles of their status as protected wildlife and removes them from the customary supervision and licensing mechanisms.

The request to stop the move claimed that the Prison Service had already begun infrastructure work in the field, which included digging a trench around the prison, and that a budget of 21 million NIS was allocated from the Ministry of National Security for the pilot.

Let Animals Live claims that the decision was made without authority and while ignoring the opinions of professionals and legal advice, who warned of danger to the animals, the public, and the environment.

On the other hand, the state has not yet presented its official position in court, and this is expected to be received as part of the response to the interim order.

Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, in response to the order issued by the court: "Again, in a time of war - the legal system sides with the terrorists, and thwarts important steps for Israeli deterrence. We know that the terrorists are worried about the arrival of the crocodiles, but today the court came to their aid.
