Hadera Magistrate's Court Judge Yifat Ungar Biton made comments that allegedly reveal prejudices against the ultra-Orthodox sector. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a report by Yair Altman on Channel 14, these are serious things she said to two Haredi witnesses who appeared in the case she was handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Judge Unger-Bitton on the recording: "Sir, you speak at a rapid pace. I'm saying that you are used to entering the synagogue for prayers and finishing it in a fast time. You run the prayer at a crazy pace. No one except you knows how to understand the prayer... but we speak slowly here, we need to understand what you are saying.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In another recording, she said to another witness in the same case: "Is this your affidavit? This zeitle (Yiddish note) that you brought with you?"\" <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The witness replied in the affirmative: "You refer to it as a tseitela - but for us it is a significant document.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following the judge's words, the two filed a complaint with the Ombudsman against the judges, Asher Kola, claiming that these quotes show prejudice against Haredim, disdain for them and their beliefs, and contemptuous conduct that undermines the proper conduct of the proceedings and the public's trust in the judicial system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to the Channel 14 report, the judge replied that she may have chosen words poorly, but that there was no intention to offend, but rather to speak in terms that are out of this world - and that she apologizes for that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Following her response, Commissioner Kola decided to end the complaint: "Even if the judge's explanations are correct... it is always up to the judge to be careful with his words and to pay attention to how his words might be perceived from an objective point of view. The judge did well to apologize in response to her words to the witnesses.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
