The Knesset plenum approved the law this evening (Tuesday) in second and third readings by a majority of 58 supporters against 54 opponents that will allow for the cessation of the arrest of ultra-Orthodox deserters from military service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Immediately after the law was approved by the plenum, the Yisrael Beiteinu parties and MKs from Yish Atid announced that they had filed a petition with the High Court of Justice against the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
MK Meir Porush of United Torah Judaism sent a warning to the High Court not to invalidate the law. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added: "The bill was legally approved, and any decision by the High Court regarding it is not legally valid. The army must immediately release the Torah scholars and end their detention. Similarly, the police are prohibited from cooperating with the arrest of Torah scholars.". <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Porush threatened: "Any other conduct will lead to a civil uprising the likes of which have never been seen before by about a million and a half ultra-Orthodox people.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He promised: "Torah Judaism will continue to fight in every way for Torah students in the Land of Israel.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shas Chairman Aryeh Deri responded to the petitions: "The failed opposition led by Yesh Atid, which often preaches about democracy, decided not to respect the decision of the sovereign - the Knesset, and rushed to the Yesh Atid branch in Jerusalem - the High Court of Justice, to petition against legislation intended to prevent division in the people.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
