In his weekly lesson last night (Monday), Rabbi Yitzchak Zilberstein addressed his days among the Egyptians, and the question of how one can regret and feel mourning for the destruction of the Temple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""People ask me, how can you mourn something that happened 2,000 years ago? How can you mourn today? Of course you should cry, but how can a young man today cry about things that happened so long ago?"<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""As is well known, it is said that Emperor Napoleon passed by a Jewish synagogue on Tisha B'Av, and saw people sitting on the floor and crying. He asked: What is this? So they told him: They are crying over the Temple. He was amazed and said: 'A nation that remembers for so long what it lost \u2013 is guaranteed to receive it back'\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""Everywhere you see, among the Egyptians, and on Tisha B'Av, scholars of Torah who sit and cry with all their hearts. Why do they cry? They cry over the sorrow of the Divine Presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""Look, God has a lot of sorrow. He performs miracles for us that are not natural, and there are Jews who really, really annoy him. What does it mean to annoy him? They do the opposite of what he wants, the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""They imprison Torah scholars in the prison, and do things that are the opposite of the will of God. The Holy One, blessed be He, weeps greatly. He says: 'I perform such miracles for them, which are not according to nature, and how they behave'... This is indeed terrible and terrible.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Rabbi Silberstein then described in detail the miracles that occurred decades ago, and brought up historical memories from his youth:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""I was a young boy when the state was declared, we lived in Jerusalem. There were seven nations that wanted to destroy us, and they were throwing bombs and shells, I was at my uncle's house - my parents were abroad because my mother was sick - and going from house to house to my uncle's house was life-threatening, there was literally shooting all the time, and we all walked, all the children walked, walked and prayed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\""We all stood there and cried, remembering Zion. We were young, and how can we go back and forth? All my friends at the 'Etz Chaim' yeshiva all went to the yeshiva, how did they get through? \""Our grandfather, the late Rabbi Aryeh Levin, zt"l, as is well known, regularly visited the sick and lepers, and I asked the Reverend Rabbi Elyashiv zt"l about this, how he was permitted to do so, and Rabbi Elyashiv replied that in general it is forbidden for the public, but for Rabbi Aryeh Levin it is permitted... because he does everything except for God alone, without any interference, and only the glory of God is before his eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He concluded his emotional remarks: "So you need to know, my dears, that we are here in a reality that is not according to nature in all respects. If someone had come and said then that we would all sit here together and study Torah, we would not have believed him then... we would have been dreamers. We literally see the wonders of the Creator all the time. It is unbelievable that it will be told.
