MK Meir Porush spoke this evening (Wednesday) in a Knesset plenary debate on the Basic Law on Torah Study, and sharply criticized those opposed to the bill - calling on all Knesset members who believe in the Torah to vote in favor of the bill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his opening remarks, he explained the need for the bill: "78 years ago, Ben-Gurion declared the establishment of a state, a state that he defined as a Jewish and democratic state. Ask, and it would be a good question, how is it possible that in a state where the Declaration of Independence was written by its founders about the "eternal book of books," the Basic Law on Torah Study was not enacted immediately upon its establishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\""But in recent years, a new group of politicians has become stronger, we call them Ugandan politicians. Some are politicians here in the Knesset and some are politicians who pose as lawyers, legal advisors and judges.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his speech, he sharply attacked the Knesset members on the left, along with the judiciary: "They don't understand, because what do they have to do with the Torah? From their perspective, it was possible to establish a state in Uganda, a democratic state, without any connection to the Jews, and there really is no reason or logic to enact a Basic Law on Torah study. What does Uganda have to do with Torah study?".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Porush mentioned the official position of the defense establishment in favor of Torah study: "How absurd it is, because who doesn't accept the position of the politicians from Uganda - the army. After the terrible disaster on Simchat Torah 5774, the then Defense Minister, now a darling of the left, Yoav Galant, established a professional security committee, with the blessing of the then Director General of the Defense Ministry and current Chief of Staff, Eyal Zamir, and the then Chief of Staff, Herzi Levy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eliezer Shkedi, which included a number of senior army officers, recommended the following: "Maintaining the core values \u200b\u200bof the Haredi world - protecting Torah students whose "Torah is their art" (studying three Sederim a day)." With great pain, he also addressed the right-wing MKs who intend to vote against the bill: "To those MKs from the coalition who intend to oppose the law, some of whom even wear kippahs, I want to say: What do you have for the Land of Israel? You, the srugot wearers, supposedly advocates, do not give up and cherish every grain of land here in the Land of Israel, because it was promised to us in the Torah. But in everything related to Torah study, you ask that we be content with only a few grains of the Torah. It is permissible to ask you, a little, for some soul-searching.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Porush concluded: "I would like to thank my friend former MK Rabbi Moshe Shimon Roth, who was able to submit this bill while he was an MK at the beginning of the term, and MK Rabbi Moshe Gafni, who is currently leading the advancement of the bill together with all members of United Torah Judaism.
