Defense Minister Yisrael Katz has ordered the defense establishment and the IDF to immediately resolve the crisis with Chabad - and to quickly present a new outline that will regulate the status of Hasidic yeshiva students. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to a report today (Monday) by journalist Mandy Rizal, the Defense Minister's directive comes after it became clear that the cancellation of the 'Chabad arrangement' since August 2025 led to enormous strategic damage to the army, as the IDF lost hundreds of potential, high-quality and highly motivated recruits, who helped the IDF meet the recruitment quotas of the Haredi public over the years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Defense Minister's intervention comes after an explosion in official contacts between senior IDF officials and Chabad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since 2016, a unique 'Chabad arrangement' has been in place, whereby Chabad yeshiva students leave the country for a 'group' year of study at the Chabad World Center-770 - while signing a commitment to enlist at the age of 26. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
After the High Court of Justice overturned the Conscription Law, the arrangement expired, and since then, constant attempts have been made to formulate an alternative outline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Chabad-COL website reported that although the Chabad Rabbinical Court presented the IDF with no less than four different and practical compromise proposals, the representatives ran into a wall in the form of a wall. The army rejected all the proposals with the official argument of "legal limitation in the current situation," which led to a dead end - and forced the Chabad rabbis to consider drastic measures, including publishing a scathing public letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Last year, on the eve of the departure for the "Bein HaZaman" (Bein HaZaman) program, the Chabad Rabbinical Court published an extensive letter to the parents and students of Chabad yeshivahs in Israel. In a long and detailed letter, spanning two pages, the rabbis clarified the role of yeshiva students - to study Torah diligently and persistently, to the point of self-sacrifice. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
