Tens of thousands of people are feared to have perished this morning (Thursday) in earthquakes in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US Geological Survey estimates with high probability that the death toll is expected to range between ten thousand and one hundred thousand. At this stage, there have been no reports of anyone trapped among the Jewish community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The earthquake caused the collapse of buildings and extensive damage in the capital Caracas and its surroundings, and according to estimates, there will be economic damage of billions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The US Geological Survey said Venezuela was hit by two earthquakes: a main earthquake of magnitude 7.5 and a preliminary earthquake of magnitude 7.2 39 seconds earlier. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
A seismologist at the institute told the American radio station NPR that this is an event that does not happen often and when the two earthquakes occur together it is difficult to know what the results will be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Under the direction of Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, the Foreign Ministry immediately prepared for the possibility of sending an Israeli aid delegation to Venezuela following the severe earthquakes that struck the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was reported that "the ministry is conducting a situation assessment with the relevant parties and is examining the options for assistance.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Additional aftershocks are expected to hit Venezuela in the coming days. According to the USGS forecast, there is a 40% chance of another earthquake of magnitude 6 or higher in the same area in the coming week, and an earthquake of at least magnitude 5 is almost certainly expected there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eldar Levi Pascal, a resident of Caracas, described in an interview with Chan Lieberman and Gili Cohen on Channel 2: "Everything was shaking, it was something really, really scary. I'm in Caracas, I was in my apartment on the first floor and I managed to get to the ground floor. All the other people in the building also came down, all in a big panic. In my apartment there are walls with a lot of cracks, everything fell, broke, but it's not bad.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
