Police Commissioner Danny Levy today (Tuesday) issued a statement of support for the commander of the Bnei Brak police station, Lt. Col. Yuval Shavit - after National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir announced this morning that he was considering dismissing him following the unusual conduct that sparked a "public outcry" at the "Herzpnikim" faction demonstration on Highway 4 near Bnei Brak last Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The police stated that "Police Commissioner-General Major General Danny Levy spoke with the regional commander and the station commander, heard the sequence of events, and accepted their position that in the circumstances of the serious incident, during which a major traffic artery was blocked early in the morning, violating public order and harming the daily lives of tens of thousands of citizens, significant police action was required to restore public order.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n

National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir responded: "I respect the Commissioner, but at the conclusion of the lessons learned process, significant steps are required to ensure that such events do not repeat themselves, and that is what we will do.".<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In a letter sent this morning to the Commissioner, Minister Ben Gvir noted that the published recordings sparked "a severe public outcry and widespread anger," and that they show police officers throwing stun grenades in violation of procedures, dragging protesters along the road, and humiliating them. The minister also mentioned the recording in which a police officer is seen kicking a protester in the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The minister emphasized that he provides full support to Israel Police officers working for public safety, but made it clear that he will not show tolerance for serious violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
