The "Democrats" party petitioned the High Court of Justice demanding that it oblige the head of the General Security Service, David Zini, and the Israeli government to immediately provide security to party chairman Yair Golan.
Last week, the party sent an "urgent warning" letter to Shin Bet head David Zini, demanding an immediate decision on Golan's security. The letter made it clear that if this was not done by September 27, a petition would be filed with the High Court of Justice.
The appeal was made after the police raised the risk level facing Golan to level 4. The party claims that in light of the increased threat level and the intelligence information gathered on his case, it is necessary to take immediate security measures: "Golan remains without security, even though the police define the threat level against him as high. Yair Golan is exposed to dozens of concrete, explicit and chilling murder threats, and every day that passes without security leaves the petitioner as cannon fodder.".
The petition states: "The petitioner's security is at the core of the service's mission. A candidate who cannot appear in public without risk to his life is limited in managing his election campaign, compared to candidates who are not subject to a similar threat. Harming a candidate due to his political positions, during an election period, is harming the election process itself.".
Justice Minister Yariv Levin, who heads the ministerial committee for Shin Bet affairs, decided almost two weeks ago to authorize the Shin Bet to determine on its own the required response to party leaders who are citizens and do not have security.
