New information released today (Thursday) by the New York Police Department indicates that the number of hate crimes in New York City has increased by 15.81% over the past year - since the beginning of Mayor Zohran Mamadani's term.

Kan News reported that, according to the data, 425 cases of hate crimes occurred in 2026, compared to 367 cases in 2025.

Hate crimes against Jews increased by 81% and accounted for more than half of the verified hate crime cases in the first eight months of the year. This is despite Jews making up about 101% of the city's population.

Although the New York Police Department said that this past summer was the safest on record in the city, the number of hate crimes continues to increase.

Jewish community leaders in the city have blamed Mayor Mamdani for the sharp rise in anti-Semitic attacks, due to his harsh statements against Israel.

Assistant U.S. Attorney General Hermit Dillon, who heads the department's civil rights division, charged: "The Department of Justice takes anti-Semitism very seriously. The king of anti-Semitism is none other than Mayor Mamadani.".

Yesterday, while the mayor was visiting a Jewish store in the ultra-Orthodox Borough Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, pro-Israel activist Stephanie Ben-Shimol shouted at him: "It's all because of you that we have so much anti-Semitism. Shame on you for coming to Borough Park, where my grandmother went after the Holocaust.".
