After about two weeks of prolonged efforts to locate family members, the body of the late Roman Flatkanin, 65, who was found lifeless in his home on Binyamin Street in Ashkelon - several days after his death - was released for burial.
Since his passing, Rabbi Meir Buskila, commander of ZAKA Ashkelon, has worked together with ZAKA's legal department and the rabbi of the Institute of Forensic Medicine, Rabbi Asher Landau, in an attempt to locate family members who could handle bringing him for burial.
When no relatives were located, and due to the long delay, the department's personnel held numerous inquiries and conversations with the investigation officials at the Ashkelon Police Station, with the aim of securing the release of his body and preserving the dignity of the deceased.
With the help of Rabbi Asher Landau and the commander of the Ashkelon ZAKA, the necessary procedures were completed today and the body of the deceased was released for burial.
Rabbi Meir Buskila, commander of the Ashkelon ZAKA: "For about two weeks we worked non-stop to bring the deceased to a dignified burial. When it comes to a helpless person who has no one to stand by his side and take care of his last respects, it is our responsibility to be there for him.""
His funeral took place today at the Southern Cemetery in Ashkelon.
