Towards the days of forgiveness: The Lithuanian Council of Torah Sages published today (Tuesday) a scathing statement against the phenomenon of Selichot events accompanied by musical instruments.

Under the title "Crawling and Trembling at the Day of Your Coming," members of the 'Council' call not to participate in these events, nor to support or finance them.

At the beginning of the letter, the members of the "Council" refer to the expansion of the phenomenon and define it as "unsuitable.".

According to them, "Selichot events" with musical instruments run counter to the purpose of the Days of Selichot, which are intended for repentance, remorse, and soul-searching in preparation for the Days of Judgment.

According to the letter, the nature of the events changes the essence of the selichot. "God forbid that a lofty and sacred concept established by the Sages be turned into an event of entertainment and musical performance." They claim that these events are also accompanied by "serious breaches of holiness and modesty.".

The council members join in their words the position expressed by the great men of Israel and call - "God forbid, do not participate in such events.".

The call is also addressed to the authorities and entities that fund the events, because these events should not be "supported and financed by the authorities or in any way whatsoever" - with particular opposition to their holding in synagogues and study centers.

The members of the 'council' also extend their opposition to other prayers accompanied by music. "Likewise, prayers and praise should not be held accompanied by musical instruments.".

The members of the 'Council' call for adhering to tradition in preparation for the Day of Judgment. "And God will raise us up high to adhere to the tradition of our ancestors, and will write and seal us for a good life.".
