Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is currently holding discussions on the appointment of the Minister of the Interior, and is expected to soon choose a person to fill the position after a year in which it was vacant.
According to a report this evening (Thursday) in 'Kan News', the appointment in the portfolio that belongs to Shas in the coalition division will be made in coordination with Aryeh Deri, who will only approve a candidate who is agreed upon.
The leading candidates for the position are coalition chairman Ofir Katz, ministers Mickey Zohar and Yariv Levin, and Interior Ministry Director General Israel Ozan.
The law allows the prime minister to appoint a Knesset member to the position without the approval of the Knesset plenum. If an ear, who is not a Knesset member, is appointed, this would require approval by a vote in the Knesset.
Levin is Deri's preferred candidate, but there will be difficulties in appointing him because he holds four portfolios.
Earlier this month, Netanyahu informed the High Court of Justice that he intends to appoint an interior minister before the elections.
