Uri Zaki, former chairman of Meretz and the partner of Knesset member and former Minister of Environmental Protection Tamar Zandberg, told today (Thursday) how he was forced to replace his old tallit - and purchased a new one with a blue thread.
Zaki, 52, tweeted on his X account, under the title "And we put a thread of tekhel on the top of the wing": "For about 39 years, every weekday morning since the bar mitzvah, I have wrapped myself in the same tallit. Recently, the signs of the times have taken their toll on it, and I had to purchase a new tallit.".
He added: "I was surprised to find a tallit with a blue thread! How exciting it is to know that what was lost to the Jewish people about 1,300 years ago has returned thanks to research and science, and a Jew can once again observe the original tzitzit commandment, both written and spoken.".
In the past, Zaki has said that he wears tefillin and his deep connection to Judaism. "I am a great believer in the Torah, I believe in the people of Israel, in the choice of the people of Israel to be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.".
Zaki, a former senior member of the Meretz and Democrats parties, recently announced his abandonment of Yair Golan's party and his transfer of political support to Gadi Eisenkot and the Yashar! party.'
