The Prime Minister's Office confirmed this evening (Tuesday) that Israel is behind the attack last night on the Abu a-Dhur military airport in Syria.
A statement published in English stated that the attack was carried out against the backdrop of an intention to deploy Turkish forces at a base located near Aleppo.
The Prime Minister's Office announced that although Israel and Syria had agreed to maintain the status quo in security matters, Damascus was about to violate it - by allowing Turkish forces to deploy at the base.
The statement further stated: "Israel has repeatedly warned Syria that such a deployment would pose a threat to its security, and Syria has chosen to ignore these warnings." It concluded by saying: "Israel will not tolerate threats to its security, and will welcome a return to the status quo.".
The attack targeted runways and hangars used to park aircraft. Just last week, a Turkish delegation visited there as part of Turkish reconstruction efforts.
A security source told Kan News that Israel has recently attempted to reach an understanding with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa through indirect dialogue. After behind-the-scenes talks failed, Israel informed the United States of intelligence information indicating Turkey's attempts to establish itself at the Syrian airport. Israel claimed that this was a violation of the agreements.
According to the same source, after the failure of the talks and prior to the arrival of Turkish forces, Israel attacked the Syrian base, the restoration of which had recently begun.
