The summer congestion in international aviation is also felt today (Friday) at Ben Gurion Airport: In just 3 hours, an unusual backlog of approximately 90 flights was recorded.

A high concentration of landings in a short period of time creates a significant burden on the entire operational chain at the airport and affects the rate of aircraft handling, waiting times, and baggage unloading.

The backlog was created against the backdrop of the high levels of activity that characterize the summer months, alongside traffic congestion and restrictions in European airspace, with an emphasis on Greece, as well as the presence and flights of American refuelers. This means that flights that are supposed to arrive in stages throughout the day are sometimes squeezed into narrow time windows and create congestion.

The Airports Authority explains that "when a large number of flights arrive in close proximity, a reduced availability of parking spaces reduces operational flexibility and increases pressure on ground systems.".

The challenge is particularly significant today, with approximately 90,000 passengers expected to pass through Ben Gurion Airport on incoming and outgoing flights. The combination of the high volume of activity, the flight backlog, and operational constraints affects the entire handling chain and may result in delays and waiting times, including when luggage arrives at the conveyor belts.

Contrary to the publications - there is no shortage of workers

To cope with the workload, the Airports Authority is continuously operating its ground crews, logistics system, and porters with reinforced forces.

The teams work around the clock and in harsh heat conditions to address the flight backlog, expedite the handling of aircraft and cargo, and minimize delays and waiting times as much as possible.

The Airports Authority is aware of the inconvenience experienced by some passengers and regrets the delays and waiting times. The Authority asks the public to be patient and understanding and emphasizes that all teams are working continuously and at full capacity to respond to the congestion.
