Hundreds of Gur Hasidim rioted outside Prison 10 this evening (Monday), shortly before a huge Hasidic rally - in protest of the arrest of a 'defector' - who came to the draft office to arrange an exemption and was sentenced to 20 days in prison.
The police allocated an area for the protest in front of the prison, led by the Rebbe of Gur, and attempted to cordon off the rally. However, footage from the scene shows many of the protesters shaking the fence, attempting to dismantle and knock it down.
MK Yitzhak Goldknopf shouted into the loudspeaker: "The business is collapsing! There is a lack of life insurance here.".
According to a report by Eli Hirshman on Channel 12, the police gave up - and left the fence open.
Buses from all over the country took the protesters to the prison.
In Gur, the public was instructed not to engage in violence, but the documentation proves that the instructions were ineffective.
According to reports, several protesters even tried to enter the military prison grounds.
Four Hasidim were treated for dehydration, and one was injured by tear gas sprayed at him by a military police soldier while trying to enter the prison grounds.
In parallel with the rally at Prison 10, ultra-Orthodox protesters blocked traffic routes in Jerusalem. The police statement said that the protesters were disrupting order on Bar Ilan Street, Haim Bar-Lev Boulevard, and in the Yehuda Hanasi neighborhood in Beit Shemesh.
""Troublemakers are throwing objects, blocking traffic routes and vehicles, and refusing to obey the orders of the forces on site. Jerusalem District police and Border Guard soldiers are working to clear the routes and repel the troublemakers, after a police officer placed a placard at the scene and the participants did not respond to calls, using means to disperse the demonstrations.".
