Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa said that Syria is serious about reaching a security agreement with Israel that will maintain the stability of the region.
According to a report this morning (Friday) in the Turkish Anadolu news agency, the Syrian president said that "the negotiations with Israel have not reached a dead end - but they are being conducted with great difficulty because of the Israeli presence in Syria.".
Al-Shara added: "Despite Israel's behavior, Syria is serious about achieving some kind of security agreement that will maintain the stability of the region.".
He said, "Syria has moved from a state of crisis to a state where countries see it as an island of regional and international stability, because many experienced Syria during times of crisis and, on the other hand, experienced the short period of time in which many achievements were made.".
He noted that in the war in Lebanon, many solutions can be found besides damaging structures and infrastructure, especially when this country cannot bear a conflict of such a scale.
He said, "The link between Lebanon and southern Syria could pose a significant threat to regional security, and not just to the security of Syria.".
According to a report in 'Kan News', about two and a half weeks ago, the Syrian president visited Britain and said that his administration had tried to hold direct and indirect contacts with Israel, without success: "We reached good points, but Israel changed its mind at the last minute.".
Regarding Hezbollah, al-Shara said: "It is Syria's obligation to protect its borders and prevent arms smuggling. We paid a price because of Hezbollah's involvement. We do not want the conflict to penetrate Lebanon, but we are obligated to protect our borders and our people, and to prevent arms smuggling.".
