Police officers from the Moriah Station arrested a Jerusalem resident in his 50s last night (Sunday) on suspicion of involvement in incidents of mezuzah theft, vandalism, and arson in the Kiryat HaYovel neighborhood.

The suspect who was arrested, allegedly ripped off mezuzahs from the doors of residents in the building he lives in over the weekend. It was also suspected that the man caused severe damage to property inside the building by setting fire to mailboxes and bicycles.

According to the police, a quick investigation led to his identification - and his arrest for questioning.

Today, the police will request an extension of his detention in court, to continue the necessary investigative activities.

The police said: "Beyond the fact that this was a serious criminal incident that could have ended in disaster, the suspect is suspected of intentionally damaging the private sacred objects of the building's residents. We will continue to act resolutely against damage to public and private property, and will take all necessary actions to bring the suspect in this despicable act to justice.".
