The chairman of Religious Zionism, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, decided to add to the Religious Zionism list for the 26th Knesset, Major General (res.) Yossi Bachar, a resident of Kibbutz Be'eri and one of the heroes of the battles of October 7.

His mother, Geula, was murdered in the massacre. After the body of the kidnapped Sahar Baruch was returned, Bachar revealed that he was his sister's son. His son is married to the granddaughter of Rabbi Dov Lior.

Bachar is moving into the political arena after decades of military service and a long line of senior command positions in the IDF - including commander of the General Staff Corps, commander of the Gaza Division, commander of the Galilee Division and commander of the Paratrooper Brigade.

On the morning of October 7th, he left his home in Bari, fought for hours against dozens of Hamas terrorists, and helped defend the residents of the kibbutz.

Later in the war, he served as deputy commander of the Southern Command and participated in planning and commanding the fighting in the Gaza Strip.

Chairman of Religious Zionism, Minister Bezalel Smotrich:

"Yossi Bachar is an Israeli hero, a man of settlement and security, who understands the importance of settlement to Israel's security. A warrior and commander with many rights, and a man who symbolizes a strong national spirit that acts resolutely for Israel's security even in the most difficult moments. Yossi brings with him rich security experience, proven leadership, and love of the country.".

""His joining is great news for religious Zionism and the State of Israel. We are connecting Kedumim and Bari and building Israel's security belt.".

Maj. Gen. (res.), Yossi Bachar: "After decades of military service for the security of Israel, and especially since the tragedy of the October 7 attacks, I am called today to the flag to continue the national mission in the public arena as well. I join Religious Zionism out of deep faith in the path of the movement and in the leadership of Minister Smotrich, who demonstrated throughout his term an uncompromising commitment to strengthening Israel's security, to strengthening the settlement and the future of the state.".

""I am mobilizing to ensure that no family in Israel goes through what the Bachar family went through in Bari on October 7th.".
