The Tax Authority is expected to launch a move to deny tax benefits to associations of Haredi yeshivahs where students who do not enlist in the IDF study.
According to a report this evening (Wednesday) in Kan News, the authority is expected to contact Haredi yeshivahs in the coming weeks, whose donations benefit from tax benefits, and demand that they declare whether "renegades" are studying there.
At the same time, yeshivahs will be required to submit a list of students that will be reviewed by the military authorities - and a yeshivah where 'deserters' study will not be able to benefit from tax benefits.
According to estimates, the benefits to yeshivas amount to tens of millions of shekels a year.
The Tax Authority's move comes after Attorney Gali Baharav-Miara issued a directive about a month ago, according to which anyone who donates to yeshivahs whose students do not enlist will not be eligible for tax benefits.
The directive provoked very strong reactions in the ultra-Orthodox parties.
The Kan News edition reported that even before her response to the High Court, the Attorney General instructed the Tax Authority and professional bodies to prepare a staff study to stop subsidizing donations to Haredi yeshivas. About two weeks ago, it was reported that Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich is working to restore tax benefits to associations that fund yeshivas whose students do not enlist.
