Two and a half years after the October 7 massacre: New details are revealed about the heroic story of Nahal patrol fighter Aner Shapira, the hero of the 'Death Shield' in the badlands.
In an interview with Ilana Dayan on Galei Tzahal, his mother, Shira, shared findings from an IDF investigation that was passed on to the family, which reveal additional details about his actions in his final moments.
""We received the IDF investigation a month, about a month and a half ago, and it turns out that it's much more than we thought," said Shira.
The investigation shows that Shapira continued to act with extraordinary determination even after being seriously wounded, repeatedly repelling grenades thrown at the shelter by Hamas terrorists. "Enar threw about ten grenades, and maybe even more. Even after being hit by RPG fire and losing one of his hands, he managed to throw out two more grenades.".
The mother emphasized that this was a rare feat of heroism, and noted that in her son, it was not a matter of separate qualities: "With him, creativity, responsibility, caring and heroism were one whole. He is the same person who cares - and he is the same person who acts in the moment of truth.".
During the terrorist attack, civilians were hiding in a shelter near the R'ei after fleeing the Nuba party. Hamas terrorists threw grenades at them, and in the footage released later, Shapira is seen standing bravely at the entrance to the shelter, repeatedly pushing back the grenades to ward off the danger and protect those around him.
