During a discussion in the Finance Committee, United Torah Judaism faction chairman Uri Maklev launched an attack against claims about the level of education in ultra-Orthodox educational institutions.
In a heated debate with MK Naor Shiri of Mish Atid, Maklev exposed the unpleasant truth to opposition representatives about the way in which the general system actually relies on the quality of Haredi teaching.
""Those teachers you call 'people of the lands,' those who supposedly know nothing - when they come to state-religious education, you welcome them with open arms," Maklev attacked.
According to him, the state system is "thirsty" for the quality manpower from the Haredi seminaries, but when it comes to budgeting for those institutions themselves, the tone changes to disdain and incitement.
Maklev added and claimed that even senior members of the legal system, who sometimes criticize the sector, personally benefit from the Haredi education: "All of them, even legal advisors - their children studied with the Haredi women! It's perfectly fine there!""
MK Naor Shiri tried to claim that Maklev's words actually "strengthen" the opposition's claims. But Maklev was not left unchallenged and clarified that the problem is not the professional level - which is high by all accounts - but rather the cynical attempt to disqualify the Haredi public only when it stands up for its basic rights to fair budgeting.
""When it's convenient for you, the Haredi teacher is the best in the system. When it comes to budgetary justice - you remember to call us 'ignorant,'" said those around Maklev after the discussion.
